Community and social responsibility: Kwan's story

At Deriv, making a difference means taking action where it matters most. Recently, we had the privilege of supporting Kwan, a young boy from Myanmar who, along with his family, resides in Malaysia. Kwan was born with a cleft lip, a condition that affects facial development and can present both physical and social challenges. Through a critical medical intervention and thanks to the generosity of a skilled surgeon and the support of our Deriv community, his story has taken a remarkable turn.
It all started with a life-changing surgery for Kwan
On 7 February, Kwan underwent a cleft lip surgery to restore function and appearance, and importantly, his bright, confident smile. This transformative procedure was made possible thanks to the selflessness of a surgeon who waived their fee, coupled with Deriv’s funding of hospital expenses. Together, we ensured that Kwan had access to the necessary care to improve his quality of life.
The surgery marks the beginning of Kwan’s medical journey. Over the coming months, he is scheduled to undergo a second procedure to repair his cleft palate. This next step will further enhance his ability to speak, eat, and express himself freely. Throughout this process, we remain committed to supporting him every step of the way, from medical consultations to follow-ups, to ensure his full recovery.
Our continued focus on helping communities
Moments like this reaffirm our vision to open doors for children to grow, express themselves and live full, enriched lives. Our commitment to creating opportunities for children is deeply rooted in our social responsibility ethos. In 2024, we partnered with Puttinu Cares, a Maltese NGO supporting children with cancer and their families. Through a six-month CSR programme, our employees dedicated their time to manning charity shops, hosting carnivals, and even participating in creative fundraising activities like car washes and donation drives. These shared goals drive us to impact lives meaningfully.
A special visit to our Cyberjaya office
Just days after his surgery, on 12 February, we had the honour of welcoming Kwan and his family to our Cyberjaya office. Meeting him in person, witnessing the progress he had made in such a short time, and hearing the heartfelt gratitude of his family was a deeply moving experience for all of us. Kwan’s resilience, joy, and radiant smile served as a powerful reminder behind our efforts and inspires us to continue creating opportunities for children to thrive.
Spreading kindness, changing lives
Through our social impact initiatives, we aim to create real, lasting impact. Whether it’s supporting a life-changing surgery like Kwan’s or uplifting communities through sustainable solutions, our focus remains on improving lives through action and compassion. With the collective efforts of our team, partners, and supporters, we continue to build better futures—one smile at a time.
